Starting from December 17, 2024, China has upgraded the original 72/144 hour transit visa free policy to a 240 hour transit visa free policy. The following are the core adjustments and implementation points: Core policy changes Extended Stay Time The original 72 hour and 144 hour visa free transit policies have been completely cancelled and uniformly extended to 240 hours (10 days), applicable to all eligible transit passengers. Expanding the scope of cross regional activities Foreigners holding transit visa free visas are allowed to travel across provinces in the stay areas of 24 provinces (districts, cities), breaking through the restrictions of the original single city or region. Newly added port coverage 21 new transit visa free entry and exit ports have been added, bringing the total number of applicable ports to 58 (such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, etc.). Applicable conditions and precautions Target audience: Citizens from 54 countries (including Norway, the United States, Korea, Japan, etc.) must hold valid international travel documents (valid for ≥ 3 months) and confirmed connecting tickets to third countries/regions. Exception restriction: If the passport is not valid enough, has a refusal record, or has a record of illegal entry and exit within 5 years, it will not be possible to apply for visa exemption. Timeliness: As of April 2025, the latest policy is a 240 hour visa exemption, and the original 144 hour policy has been abolished.
